Energy Saving / Energy-Efficient HVAC Tips
Change Your Air Filters
Change your air filters. Change your air filters. Can we say it again?
Regularly changing your HVAC air filter is probably the single most important thing you can do for your A/C system. It’s very much comparable to changing the oil on your car.
Changing your filter:
- Improves the quality of the air cycling through your system (the air you breathe)
- Protects the air conditioner unit’s motor and coil (these are costly repairs if you don’t change your air filter)
- Prolongs the life of your system
- Makes it so that your system doesn’t have to work as hard, meaning it uses less energy
Programmable Thermostat Installation (Preferably WiFi)
A programmable thermostat is ideal if you are away from home for long periods of time because it allows you to program your air conditioner or heater/furnace to turn on or off at preset times and temperatures. You preset the heating or air conditioning to work more while you are home and less while you are away so your system isn’t running while you’re not around.
If you get the WiFi programmable thermostat, you don’t ever have to worry about accidentally leaving the air conditioning or heater on (even with your programmed settings) because you can control your system from your phone anywhere in the world that you have internet access.
Imagine having turned your system off because you went on a summer vacation and now you are coming home, but it is 100 degrees outside. Do you want to walk into a 90 degree house that will take hours to cool off? With a WiFi Programmable Thermostat, you can turn the A/C on while you are on the way home.
Used properly, a programmable thermostat can help save anywhere from 5% to 15% of annual HVAC system energy costs.
Repair, Seal, Replace, or Upgrade Air Ducts
If your ducts aren’t properly maintained, you can lose A LOT of the A/C or heating to your attic through leakage. When the hot or cold air leaks or seeps out of your ducts, your HVAC system has to work that much harder, and use that much more energy to get to the temperature on your programmable thermostat. Get your air ducts checked for any possible leaks that need repair, sealing or replacing.
Another option with your ductwork is to upgrade your existing air ducts to more energy efficient ducting. The most common ducts are R4 level. R6 is an upgrade to the insulation around each duct which limits heating or cooling air leakage. R8 is the highest level of air ducts recommended for residential use and can significantly reduce the amount of ambient temperature transfer into the duct.
Regularly Schedule Air Conditioner Tune Up & Furnace Maintenance
Regular, preventive service & maintenance for your air conditioner or furnace/heater is the best way to lengthen the life of your HVAC system while maximizing energy efficiency.
Better energy-efficiency = lower energy use = you save money with a lower monthly utility bill.
Even the “latest and greatest”, most energy-efficient HVAC system installation will decline in performance and efficiency over time without regular service and maintenance.
RC Air offers regularly scheduled maintenance service for your HVAC system before and during each cooling & heating season. Save yourself time & money by keeping your system running optimally all year round with HVAC service & maintenance.
Energy-Efficient Air Conditioner &/Or Heater Installation
Is your system over 10 years old? If you have an older air conditioning system or furnace/heater, it may be time and make more financial sense to invest in having a new energy efficient HVAC system installed.
Is your a/c system failing to keep your home or office comfortable for you? Depending on the age and condition of your system, today’s energy efficient HVAC systems can be nearly 2x as energy efficient as older models.
It might be time to replace or upgrade your older, inefficient, A/C equipment with a new Energy Star qualified HVAC system. Installing a more efficient system helps reduce your energy use, cut your utility costs, and save you money on your annual energy expenses.
There are a couple other simple things you can do around the house or office building like keeping the blinds / shades closed on windows where the sun hits in hot summer months, and of course opening those same blinds / shades in the cooler winter months to let the warmth of the sun in. If you have ceiling fans, they can help circulate the air in your home which may allow you to keep your air conditioner a few degrees higher without being uncomfortable.
Lastly, to make sure you don’t waste any energy when you are running your HVAC system, double check that all of your doors & windows are closed.
Well that’s pretty much it for the major energy savings things you can do.
